This project required the renovation of the operational
MBTA Silverline and Redline station levels at the South Station
transit facility located in Boston, Massachusetts. Work included
the installation of new surface finishes at walls, floors, stairs
and columns, new ceilings and light fixtures. The relocation of
certain existing elements was required in order to provide for
specified new work, as well as selective demolition throughout
active station areas. Additionally, the four existing station
kiosks at Dewey Square were removed and replaced with two
new elevators and four contemporary head houses. A major
architectural feature of this project was the design-build of the
four new head houses. The four geometrically challenging head
houses required extensive coordination between the concrete
foundation, structural steel and multidimensional glazing.
This project demonstrates J.F. White's ability to work
with the owner's operational managers in a variety of complex
construction phasing situations.
