J.F. White's Mechanical Division was contracted by the
Massachusetts Port Authority to remove 2 existing 4" High
Temperature Hot Water (HTHW) pipes and replace them with
8" schedule 80 pipes. These pipes are located within the
Airport's Central Heating/Cooling Plant. Included in the scope
of work was the removal/replacement of a shell & tube heat
exchanger, the installation of new HTHW controls and the
insulation of pipe & equipment. JFW self performed all work
except the insulation.
Unique aspects of the project included working within
an operating facility, the location of the heat exchanger and the
centerline elevation of the pipe. The heat exchanger required a
difficult rigging procedure and most of the pipe work was
performed in a manlift.
The project was completed successfully with minimal
impact to the owner. J.F. White was awarded the 2006
Massport Contractor of the Year Award for projects under one
million dollars for our efforts.
