Secondary Clarifier Batteries A & B

Secondary Clarifier Batteries A & B

This major public works project involved the construction of two batteries of stacked wastewater clarifiers for secondary wastewater treatment for the metropolitan Boston area.

The geographical arrangement was two batteries, A&B, side by side of eighteen stacked clarifiers connected by an 810 ft long main pipe and process systems gallery running north to south. At the south end across the two batteries running east to west, was the 520 ft. long secondary cross gallery.

The entire structure footprint covered ten acres and had a capacity of nearly 30,000,000 gallons. Two electrical buildings were constructed for power distribution and control along with two scum control/process buildings.

At the project's peak construction period, two shifts were employed. All personnel were transported to the site either by bus or by boat. All materials were ferried from the MWRA's Fore River Staging Area and an onsite concrete batch plant was set up on the island.
