In November 2002 the Massachusetts Highway Department awarded J.F. White Contracting Company a $48 million dollar Contract to demolish a portion of the existing I-93 Northbound/Southbound structure and to construct a new onramp from Boston's historic North End to I-93 Northbound.

The  project also entailed demolition and proper removal of the existing I-93 NB and SB viaduct structure (including the truss over the Charles River) from Bent 2 to Bent 24. Two temporary bents were installed in the Charles River to support the existing I-93 Truss structure during demolition. Each temporary bent consisted of eight (2 locations x 4 piles/location) steel H-piles driven approximately 100' from barges set up in river. Piles were driven with height restrictions since clearance under the existing structure was approximately 50'. A cofferdam consisting of Steel Sheeting was driven approximately 25' long into the bed of the Charles River from a barge.

Approximately 730 lf of permanent sheeting was installed along the Miller's River as part of a finished walkway along the riverbank. This was installed as part of an "architectural" finish in this area.
