  • Drilled Shafts, Steel Sheeting, H-Piles and Cofferdams
  • Steel sheeting bulkheads with walers and battered piles in the channel to support the channel widening.

J. F. White Contracting Company was contracted by MassDot to construct a vertical lift bridge with a truss type structure that spans 450 feet from bank to bank and provides 175 feet of vertical clearance in the raised position. The lift span was constructed on land adjacent to the project and launched across the channel utilizing incremental launch techniques.

J. F. White partnered with MassDot, the U. S. coast Guard (USCG), the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the cities of Boston and Chelsea, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MADEP), and fuel terminal merchants to maintain an active shipping channel.

The bridge and approach roadway matched the footprint of the existing bridge and provides for four lanes of traffic (two in each direction) and two pedestrian sidewalks.

A warning gate and bridge traffic signal operations were installed and are interconnected with the Central Ave./Marginal St./Eastern Ave. intersection in Chelsea to provide for continuous traffic operations during bridge openings.

Contract value: $132,895,000
