I-93 Rapid Bridge Replacement FAST 14

Project Highlights:
  • 252 precast structural deck modules
  • 22,000 lf of movable “zipper” barrier
  • two 1,800 lf traffic “crossovers” used to divert traffic
  • reconstructed 1,008 bearing locations
  • temporarily supported existing bridge stringers in 628 locations

This unprecedented fast‐track, design‐build project replaced 14 deteriorated bridge superstructures on I‐93 in Medford, MA under the Accelerated Bridge Program in just 10 weekends between June and mid‐August 2011. The extremely compressed time frame was “every day critical” from Contract Award in early February 2011 through the opening of each of the 14 new bridges to traffic. The expedited design process as well as the integrated quality control and assurance system was managed by the project team in conjunction with MassDOT and the Federal Highway Administration during multiple weekly focus meetings over the course of 4 months.

Using conventional methods, it would have taken at least four years to replace all 14 bridges. The innovations used to accelerated the bridge replacements include a prefabricated bridge elements system and an Ultra‐High Performance Concrete achieving 2,000 PSI within 4 hours of final set was developed on the project for use in the “closure pour” joining the precast deck modules and completing the deck prior to opening to traffic on Monday mornings.

Contract value: $89,700,000.
